New Michigan Man: OT Jack Stewart Commits to Michigan

After missing on several offensive line targets in the last two classes and the lack of development on the current roster, the staff has made the offensive line a priority in this class. And the staff just added another piece to it as 2019 New Canaan (CT) OT Jack Stewart has committed to Michigan.

Commitment

Scouting Report

After the first 30 seconds of Stewart’s junior highlight tape, I asked the age old question, “how is this guy ranked this low?”. Stewart is a big, athletic, physical tackle that can use his strength to open holes and his athleticism to get in the open field and clear a path. He also has a tendency to bury his opponents or drive them out of bounds whenever given the chance. He’s also a standout high school wrestler. Competition level is obviously part of it, as it is for most recruits, but I’m not looking into that too much. I believe Stewart has the natural size and raw talent to develop into a very productive player for Michigan.

Recruitment

Stewart was a heavily recruited prospect, holding offers from some big name programs all over the country. However, that interest didn’t really come about until the turn of the new year, where he ended up receiving 13 offers in the first three months of 2018. But it was the offer and visit in early April that clearly stood out the most. That trip to Michigan quickly moved the Wolverines to the top of his list ($).

Just a week after leaving Ann Arbor with an offer in hand, and making a quick trip to Texas to visit TCU, Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M, he made the decision to commit to Michigan.

  • Height: 6’5”

  • Hometown (School): New Canaan, CT (New Canaan)
  • Notable Offers: Texas A&M, Arizona State, Ole Miss, TCU, Boston College, Army
  • Rankings: Rivals (2*) – 247Sports (3*, #56 OT) – ESPN (NR)
  • Composite Ranking: Three star, #1012 Overall, #83 OT, #7 in Connecticut

Highlights

As for the Rest of the Class

Stewart is the 9th overall commitment, the 3rd offensive line commitment and the first commitment out of Connecticut. He’ll be far from the last offensive line addition though as the staff is in fantastic shape to add both OL William Harrod, OL Karsen Barnhart and OL Zach Carpenter. Even if all three commit, it still may not even be the end of the recruiting for that group as OT Xavier Truss and OT Trevor Keegan are still on the board. As for other positions to watch, Michigan is in good shape with some big names on the board, including DT Mazi Smith, S Daxton Hill, DE Zach Harrison, S Keontra Smith, WR John Dunmore and DE Michael Fletcher.
