New Michigan Man: DB Sammy Faustin Commits to Michigan

Since coming to Michigan, Don Brown has made it a priority to recruit tall, long, athletic defensive backs. So far, he’s done a pretty good job at landing the players he targets most. And that’s especially true with his latest get, as 2018 Naples (FL) DB Sammy Faustin has committed to Michigan just days after his visit to Ann Arbor.

Commitment

Scouting Report

Faustin is a long, rangy defensive back that shows good speed and the willingness to make any tackle. He could play either cornerback or safety at the collegiate level, though it looks like the staff is targeting him to be a safety. His game reminds me a bit of former UM cornerback, Channing Stribling. And like Stribling, Faustin will need to put on a little more size to play at the collegiate level (especially at safety) but, once he does, he could become a regular contributor in the secondary and, at the very least, a standout on special teams.

Recruitment

While Faustin may not have the amount of stars that fans want, his game is everything Don Brown and Michigan crave out of defensive backs. And that was evident by the staff extending an offer to the Naples standout back in February.

Though there were plenty of questions surrounding whether or not he’d be a take for the staff, if/when he wanted to commit, all of that was figured out when the staff saw him in person for the 2017 BBQ at the Big House.

Everything Faustin saw and felt during his trip was more than enough to push him over the edge. He let MGoFish know that he’d be announcing his decision prior to his senior season. And he followed up with that by publicly committing to Michigan just days after his unofficial visit.

As for the Rest of the Class

Faustin is the 13th overall commitment in the class, the 4th defensive back, the 2nd commit out of Florida and the 6th commitment out of the south. But he may not be the last for any of those categories as the staff is in good-to-great position to sign Ridge Point (TX) TE Mustapha Muhammad, Miami (FL) DB Josh Jobe, Oxbridge Academy (FL) S CJ Smith, Parkway North (MO) DT Michael Thompson and IMG Academy (FL) OL Daniel Faalele.

As for who could be the next commitment for the class, it’s a bit of a tossup at the moment as there aren’t any sure-fire gets that are expected in the near future. However, one player that looks to be extremely high on Michigan is Lowndes (GA) RB Michael Barrett. But, like Faustin, it’ll likely come down to whether or not he’s a take for the staff when he’s ready to make a decision.
