New Michigan Man: DB Kody Jones Commits to Michigan

Some coaching hires work out take some time to prove its worth but then there are the home-run hires that start paying off immediately. And that has been Co-DC/DB coach Maurice Linguist as he went into Tennessee and pulled out two stud defensive back prospects, starting with the commitment of 2022 Germantown (TN) DB Kody Jones.

Commitment

Scouting Report

Game breaker. That’s the first thing I thought when I watched his sophomore highlight tape. I don’t even need to see his junior tape to know Jones has that blue chip ability. Michigan is reportedly targeting him at cornerback and you can see why with his fluidness in changing directions, his ability to stop on a dime, and explosive first three steps. He may be a guy that gets on the field quickest through special teams but with some time focused on one position, he could make a big impact at defensive back for the Wolverines.

Recruitment

Like mentioned earlier, this was the first commitment for the new defensive coaching staff which was just put in place a couple of weeks ago so this recruitment was in hyper speed. Michigan offered Jones on January 20th and immediately became a priority for new Co-DC/DB coach Maurice Linguist and the new coach showed his skills with his new university behind him.

Jones was immediately sold on everything Michigan has to offer. And though he held offers from programs all over the country, including plenty in SEC country, he decided to jump on board early with the Wolverines to help get the class off the ground.

Highlights

As for the Rest of the Class

Jones is the first 2022 commitment with the new staff, the fifth overall, the first cornerback, and the first get out of Tennessee. He clearly wasn’t the last either as S Taylor Groves jumped in with Jones. But this should just be the start of what is setting up to be a memorable defensive back haul in 2022. Michigan is in good shape with fellow top 300 targets CB Will Johnson, S Keon Sabb, DB Jaeden Gould, DB Larry Turner-Gooden, S Sherrod Covil, ATH Dillon Tatum, and will likely never give up on CB Domani Jackson until the final bell.
