2016 Freshmen Scouting Report: Stephen Spanellis

To kick off the official start to the 2016 Michigan football fall camp, we’ve broken down each incoming freshmen football signee. That includes their scouting report, 2016 season prediction as well as a quote from one of their positional coaches.

Stephen Spanellis, Baltimore (MD) Gilman

  • Position: Offensive Lineman
  • Height/Weight: 6’5” 315lbs
  • Commitment Date: January 22nd, 2016

Scouting Report: Spanellis is a large bodied lineman that was able to be a force at the high school level because of his size and strength alone. He’s aggressive at the point of attack but can play a little high at times. He’ll need time in the weight room and on the field to tighten up both his weight and his technique. If he puts the work in, he’s a player to watch later on down the road as a possible contributor.

True Freshmen Projection: The big man from Baltimore will spend his freshmen season on a redshirt, learning from the coaching staff and in the weight room getting himself ready to try and compete for a two-deep spot on the 2017 roster.

Tim Drevno Quote: “Stephen Spanellis comes from The Gilman School and was a teammate of Henry Poggi. They have a great tradition of football and are very well-coached. Stephen is a big, big man; he wears a size 18 shoe. He could play either tackle or guard. Stephen is the type of guy who can really move people off the ball. He has great arm length, plays with good initial quickness, and can finish blocks. Stephen is a very intelligent young man and we are excited about the opportunity to help him develop as a player.”
