2016 Freshmen Scouting Report: Ron Johnson

To kick off the official start to the 2016 Michigan football fall camp, we’ve broken down each incoming freshmen football signee. That includes their scouting report, 2016 season prediction as well as a quote from one of their positional coaches.

Ron Johnson, Camden (NJ) Camden

  • Position: Defensive End
  • Height/Weight: 6’3” 245lbs
  • Commitment Date: June 25th, 2015

Scouting Report: Johnson is a player that is flying under the radar as an incoming freshmen but, because of his raw athleticism and aggressiveness at the point of attack, he’s a player to watch closely. He’s a raw player that was a dominant force at the high school level. With some time in the weight room and on the practice field, he should have the chance to be a big time pass rusher for Don Brown and the Michigan defense.

True Freshmen Projection: The raw talent and athleticism should open eyes during fall camp but all signs point to Johnson spending his true freshmen season on a redshirt. This should help him learn the defense and spend time in the weight room which will allow him to make an impact in 2017 as the depth chart opens up.

Greg Mattison Quote: “Ron will play outside at a defensive end position for our team. He is a very good athlete that has great size and speed. I think he is just scratching the surface on how good of a football player he can be right now. Ron improved throughout the season and was fortunate enough to play in a number of all-star games, where he did very well. He is going to be a great addition to our defensive line and to the Michigan program.”
