2016 Freshmen Scouting Report: Devin Gil

To kick off the official start to the 2016 Michigan football fall camp, we’ve broken down each incoming freshmen football signee. That includes their scouting report, 2016 season prediction as well as a quote from one of their positional coaches.

Devin Gil, Pembroke Pines (FL) Flanagan

  • Position: Linebacker
  • Height/Weight: 6’2” 230lbs
  • Commitment Date: June 19th, 2015

Scouting Report: Though he was listed as a safety on most recruiting websites, Gil played in the box as a linebacker at the high school level and will stay at that position at Michigan. And it looks to be a perfect fit. He’s an athletic, fast linebacker that has a nose for the ball and always plays downhill. His ability to read the offense and sort through blockers to find and destroy the ball carrier is something that may get him on the field faster than most would have thought.

True Freshmen Projection: Athleticism like Gil’s is lacking badly on the linebacker depth chart at Michigan. Though he needs some time to get into college game day shape, that speed and tenacity could help him see the field his freshmen year. However, there will be a logjam at linebacker so it will likely take a great camp and/or fall practices to avoid a redshirt. At this point, I believe he’ll get the year to sit back, get bigger and learn.
