New Michigan Man: 2022 DT Alex VanSumeren Commits to Michigan

While the staff looks to wrap up the 2020 class and get the 2021 class off to a great start, its 2022 class started off with a bang as sophomore Garber (MI) DT Alex VanSumeren has become the first commitment of the future class.

Commitment

Scouting Report

VanSumeren is a big, physical, nasty defensive tackle that dominates at the point of attack with his size and strength. Already standing at 6’3” 270+lbs as a sophomore, he could be a monster during the remainder of his high school career. As a workout warrior as well, it’s safe to say he should be able to control his size and be a dominant force on the interior of the line during his college career.

Recruitment

This was a recruitment everyone could see coming as soon as the younger brother of Ben VanSumeren received his offer in the spring following his freshmen season. Like with most freshmen offers, the staff likely wanted to see how he progressed during his sophomore season. And after putting on a show, he has solidified himself as a big-time recruit and could end up being one of the best players in the state over the next two classes.

That sophomore showing was more than enough for the Michigan coaches and VanSumeren, who had been a frequent visitor to campus, decided to become the first piece of what could end up being a very impressive 2022 class for the Wolverines.
