New Michigan Man: CB David Long

Each and every staff has a “Most Wanted” list and the Wolverines staff just landed one of their biggest priorities in the 2016 class as Loyola (CA) CB David Long has committed to Michigan.

Long is one of the elite athletes in the country as he stars as both a cornerback and receiver at the high school level. He has that size and speed combination that every staff is looking for but adds in the instincts and quick feet necessary to be a #1 cornerback, something Michigan saw and targeted early on. Thanks to those traits and the talent that will surround him in Ann Arbor, he has a chance to play early and become a shutdown corner in the Wolverines secondary throughout his career.

Like most elite recruits, Long’s recruitment was full of ups and downs. Michigan’s staff made him a priority by offering just weeks after taking over the program. Though they were in on him early, Long was unable to visit Ann Arbor and ended up committing to in-state Stanford over the summer. However, UM didn’t give up the fight and thanks to his official visit on October 17th for the Michigan State game, he ended up decommitting from Stanford and naming Michigan and Washington his co-leaders.

Washington analysts believed they were destined to land the Loyola star but it was UM that took the lead when it mattered and Long showed it by wearing Michigan arm bands at the Army All-American game. UW didn’t give up the fight but thanks to a well documented in-home visit with Coach Harbaugh, having family in the state and childhood friend WR Dylan Crawford already joining the fold, Long decided to publicly commit to the Wolverines on ESPNU just a week and some change before NSD.

As for the Rest of the Class: Long is the 21st overall commit and the 1st cornerback and 2nd commit out of California. With him on board, all eyes turn to CB Lavert Hill, DB Jordan Fuller and ATH Khaleke Hudson to fill out the secondary of the 2016 recruiting class.
