New Michigan Man: ATH Tyrece Woods Commits to Michigan

Detroit is one of the top cities in the country at putting out Division 1 talent thanks to having multiple top-level high school programs. And that’s exactly where the Wolverines coaching staff went back to get its latest addition to the 2019 class as Belleville (MI) ATH Tyrece Woods has committed to Michigan.

Commitment

Scouting Report

Woods is a very interesting prospect. He stood out very early on in his high school career as a linebacker for King. But his natural growth moved him down to the line to defensive end but now looks like it could move him to strongside defensive end/defensive tackle. He has good athleticism for a bigger guy and shouldn’t lose much of it when he adds more size.

On tape, he shows his toughness and ability to get to the quarterback. His first step is quick and his motor will consistently make him a problem. If he adds the needed size and keeps his quickness, he could be a nice player on either side of the ball. But with the talent at and coming in along the defensive line, I think his collegiate career could be in a Khalid Hill-like tight end/h-back role.

Recruitment

Though he was a decently known name for in-state recruitniks, Woods didn’t really get onto the Michigan recruiting front until he received his offer from the staff in mid-June after his performance in front of the staff at the UM Big Man camp. It was clearly a huge deal not only as his first Power Five offer but getting it in-person from Jim Harbaugh and it coming from a favorite school.

With the offer in hand, he looked likely to end up choosing Michigan. However, it wasn’t a guarantee that he was a take for the staff. But they clearly went with their gut and their in-person evaluation. That’s something that should say a lot about what the staff sees in his potential. Once everything was a go, he announced his commitment to the Wolverines just weeks before his senior season.

Highlights

As for the Rest of the Class

Woods is the 20th overall commitment, the 5th defensive lineman/2nd tight end commit, and the third in-state commitment of the class. He looks to be the last in-stater for the class unless they flip a target. As for the defensive line, DE Zach Harrison and DE George Karlaftis are still atop the wish list, with Harrison being the better bet, especially with the turmoil going on in Columbus.
