To kick off the official start to the 2016 Michigan football fall camp, we’ve broken down each incoming freshmen football signee. That includes their scouting report, 2016 season prediction as well as a quote from one of their positional coaches.
Joshua Uche, Miami (Fla.) Columbus
- Position: Outside Linebacker
- Height/Weight: 6’2, 215 pounds
- Commitment Date: January 25, 2016
Scouting Report: Uche played at rush end for Columbus and was able to chase down quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers to make tackles for minimal gain. His biggest strength is his speed, given it was coming from the d-line in high school and is projected a SAM linebacker at Michigan. Also, Uche has the ability to drop back in coverage and cover tight ends and receivers down the field.
True Freshman Projection: Uche will surely get an opportunity to compete as a true freshman. Unfortunately for him, he is competing with Jabrill Peppers at SAM linebacker and is not big enough to play on the defensive line at 220 pounds. Although a redshirt is likely, that is not necessarily a bad thing for Uche to gain weight and experience.
Don Brown Quote: “The number one thing he can do is he can pass rush with anyone in the East. He has a great get off and can turn the corner. Josh uses his hands really well. We’re projecting him as a SAM linebacker. Has shown some ability to be ability to defend on the edge but can also play in space. He has the ability to get bigger. We really think his pass rush ability is unique and we will work to teach him and develop his game as a linebacker. Josh is a special athletic talent.”
Chris Partridge Quote: “In high school, Josh Uche was primarily an off the edge explosive pass rusher. We are going to be able to stand him up at the SAM position, and he is also going to drop more in coverage. Josh is very fast and physical. He is going to be a guy who can do multiple things and also come off the edge and get the quarterback. Josh can run down the field and make a ton of plays. He’s got a very high motor; never stops going. Josh has a great style to him. He was definitely the best-dressed young man on his official visit. He has got a flare to him and he really enjoys style. He will be a fun young man to be around and have as a member of our football program.”
