Michigan\’s 2015 recruiting class has been a roller coaster, to say the least. Commitments, decommitments, commitments, decommitments, i\’m sure Brady Hoke is ready to smooth out the ride. Luckily, that looks like it may be on the horizon with the summer decisions of some of their top targets, including Chris Clark, Auden Tate, Miles Boykin, Darian Roseboro, Jashon Cornell, Grant Newsome and transfer Ty Isaac.
Almost Commit?
4* WR Miles Boykin visited Ann Arbor with his family, which includes two huge Michigan fans in his father and younger brother. Add in the fact that there may not be a better coaching staff out there when it comes to hosting recruits and you could guess that it went really well.
It went so well that his little brother wanted to commit. Scout\’s Sam Webb had the story ($):
\”Boykin adding “When we got back home my brother looked at me and he said, ‘Miles, you’re a better man than I am.’ And I asked what are you talking about? And he was like, ‘I would’ve committed already bro.\”
The staff knocked another visit out of the park and it\’s possible the Wolverines are the top choice for Boykin aka Devin Funchess 2.0.
Re-Commiting the Decommitments
When Damien Harris and George Campbell joined the 2015 Michigan recruiting class, the Wolverine recruiting world was flying at an all-time high. And then Team 134 went 7-6 and the staff lost the commitments of their 5 star talents. It was rough, especially when it looked like Michigan had a slim to none chance at getting either back on board.
But as Justin Bieber\’s movie reminds everyone, \”Never Say Never\”.
According to Damien Harris himself (in an interview with Scout\’s Allen Treiu (($)), the nation\’s #1 running back does not have a leader right now even though there are rumors out there that the Buckeyes are his leader with Kentucky and Michigan rounding out his top three. However, if you go off of what Harris has continued to say about what matters in his recruitment, and the fact that his mother has continued to say the Wolverines are the favorite, I believe Michigan is in good shape with Harris. The one thing that is needed to reassure his commitment is improving his relationship with new OC Doug Nussmeier.
As far as George Campbell goes, the chances with him have always been much slimmer. Ever since his uncle took over his recruitment, Michigan has fallen off a lot in favor of Florida and Florida State. However, according to Sam Webb\’s Webblog ($), Michigan will at least receive an official visit from the 5* receiver. Though the chance at a recommitment is very small, if Team 135 starts off hot and the coaches show him why he fell in love with the program in the first place, he would become a possibility again.
Speaking of Official Visitors
It looks like Campbell and Harris won\’t be the only 5* talents officially visiting Ann Arbor this fall. According to 247\’s Steve Lorenz ($), CB Iman Marshall likes the Wolverines and is \”highly likely\” to take an official visit. That is great news but it is also highly unlikely that it really affects his recruitment. USC has been the rumored favorites for a long time but a great visit and his friendship with Freddy Canteen gives the Wolverines a glimmer of hope.
Camping in Columbus
Two Team 136 commitments were showing off on enemy soil as Darrin Kirkland Jr and Tyree Kinnel both had very good camps at the NFTC at O$U, with DKJ being named LB MVP and being invited to The Opening.
As far as targets go, the news was mixed for the Maize and Blue.
- 4* RB Mike Weber named a top 3 of Ohio $tate, MSU and Wisconsin, with O$U leading. This isn\’t good news for Michigan as he is clearly one of their top two targets at running back. He still has the Wolverines in his top 5, but the chances are looking worse and worse.
- 5* DE Jashon Cornell was once favorited to land with Michigan but he was another prospect that cooled off on them after a poor season. But it looks like they are still in his top 3 along with MSU and O$U (looking like O$U is the leader after the camp visit). He\’s visiting Ann Arbor when in town for the Sound Mind Sound Body camp on June 14th. This gives the staff a chance to impress again and gain traction in his recruitment, which is supposed to end this summer.
- Look out for Cass Tech, like always, as they had some of the most impressive campers in all classes. 2015\’s RB Weber showed out until he had a slight injury, 2016\’s OL/DL Michael Onwenu was named OL MVP, 2016\’s CB Lavert Hill showed why he is the next top corner prospect in the state, 2017\’s WR Donovan Peoples-Jones showed scouts and coaches that he is a legit recruit even with a limited amount of tape, and 2017\’s CB Donovan Johnson looks to be a the next big thing out of Thomas Welcher\’s program.
Commit Watch?
The nation\’s #1 tight end, Chris Clark, is visiting Ann Arbor on June 19th and has let it be known that the Wolverines are his clear leader. His plan is to make his decision at The Opening in July but there\’s a chance he pulls the trigger while on his visit. Stay tuned.
Clark is not the only possible commitment on the horizon as OT Grant Newsome is planning on making a decision at The Opening as well. And like Clark, he is visiting in June (the 7th) and could possibly pull the trigger. His top schools are Michigan and Penn State, and with PSU having two 4* OT\’s already committed, I love the Wolverine\’s chances.
Team 136\’s recruiting class leader Alex Malzone will likely visit both weekends (June 19th for sure) to try and seal the deal with both recruits.
Before these two 2015 recruits make their decisions, there is a very possible chance Michigan adds a member to Team 136, but not a freshmen. Former USC RB and now transfer Ty Isaac is visiting Ann Arbor this week and looking to make a quick decision so he can get back into school. It\’s down to Michigan, Illinois and Northwestern. It seems like it would be an easy choice in favor of the Wolverines but because of his 100 miles-to-home waiver radius (did you get all of that?), Isaac would have to sit out the 2014 season in Ann Arbor but could play right away for the Illini or Wildcats. Basically it comes down to his want of playing right away as the featured back or redshirting for a year and playing on a much more talented team in a rotational stable.
Another name to keep an eye on is OLB recruit and good friend to Darrin Kirkland, Asmar Bilal.
Don\’t Sleep On…..
The skill positions are clearly a big need for the 2015 class and there are two names that have interest in the Wolverines but are not really being talked about. Those two names are RB Ray Ray McCloud and WR AD Miller. Miller is visiting Ann Arbor today (June 2nd) and could be a surprise addition to this class, while McCloud told GBMWolverine\’s Sam Webb ($) that he will visit this summer as well:
\”New offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier appears to covet the Sunshine State star for that very reason… he’s bigger version of Norfleet with more top-end speed.\”
Both prospects are elite talents, with Miller looking like a much more possible option. He is a long, lanky wide receiver that has a very similar game and tape to George Campbell.
